The Opening Ceremony and Preliminary Rounds of the 2024 Toronto Inaugural Senior Fitness Games Successfully Held

On July 20, 2024, under the bright sunshine and amidst a lively atmosphere, the opening ceremony of the 2024 Toronto Inaugural Senior Fitness Games was grandly held at Bercy Park North. Organized by the Multicultural Exchange Center and co-hosted by the Federation of Canadian Chinese Associations, the event marked a significant celebration of health and vitality for middle-aged and elderly participants.
The ceremony was attended by distinguished guests, including Markham City Councillor Alan Ho and Ward 6 Councillor Amanda Yeung, who delivered congratulatory speeches. Federal Member of Parliament Jean Yip (Scarborough-Agincourt) and Provincial Member of Parliament Billy Pang (Markham-Unionville) also sent letters of congratulations.
Other notable attendees included Zhou Zhijun, Secretary-General of the Federation of Canadian Chinese Associations; Honorary Chair Yang Baofeng; Vice Chair Shen Xieyuan; Co-Chairs Liu Xi, Li Dong, and Huang Lan; as well as the event directors, Gan Kezheng and Zhang Xiaoyan. Representing the Multicultural Exchange Center were President Xiaoping Hao and Vice Presidents Sarah Deng, Annie Huang, and Xiang Qun.
As the athletes' march played, 27 teams, led by the Multicultural Exchange Center’s banner carriers, entered the main venue with energy and enthusiasm. The event began with the singing of the Canadian national anthem, filling the park with a sense of pride and unity among participants.
Xiaoping Hao, President of the Multicultural Exchange Center, delivered the opening speech. She expressed heartfelt gratitude to all participating teams and emphasized that the games were not only a showcase of health and vitality but also a platform for community interaction and cultural exchange. She encouraged the Chinese community to integrate into Canadian life while preserving traditional Chinese culture and promoting multiculturalism. The event also received a congratulatory message from Chen Sitan, renowned as the "Prince of Tai Chi," who wished all participants a vibrant and enriching experience.
Zhou Zhijun, Secretary-General of the Federation of Canadian Chinese Associations, spoke next, expressing his delight in co-hosting the event. He hoped the preliminary rounds would showcase both skill and sportsmanship and announced that the awards ceremony and performances would be held during the federation’s upcoming Dragon Year Mid-Autumn Food Carnival.
The opening ceremony concluded with a ribbon-cutting ceremony led by representatives from the Multicultural Exchange Center and the Federation of Canadian Chinese Associations, officially launching the games amidst applause and cheers.
The highlight of the ceremony was a series of spectacular performances, including the Ansai waist drum and dragon-phoenix drum performance by the Dongfengcai Multicultural Arts Troupe, the Canadian Federation of Chinese Alumni Associations Drum Troupe, and the Shaanxi Association. This was followed by a Tai Chi group performance of the Eight Brocades and a grand ethnic fashion show titled Love My China by the Dongfengcai Multicultural Arts Troupe.
The preliminary rounds began with martial arts competitions in the morning, featuring 19 programs such as Tai Chi, sword and fan routines, qigong, and Mulan fan performances. Ten programs advanced to the finals.
In the afternoon, the fitness competitions commenced with a group health dance performance led by Xiaoping Hao. A total of 20 fitness programs, including health dances, square dances, waist drumming, ethnic dance aerobics, patting exercises, yoga, and aerobics, were presented. After two hours of intense competition, ten programs advanced to the finals.
The final category was group dance, characterized by lively music, North American styles, and enthusiastic participation. Out of 15 programs, eight advanced to the finals.
The day’s events concluded successfully, thanks to the dedicated efforts of volunteers and the enthusiastic participation of all teams. The 2024 Toronto Inaugural Senior Fitness Games promises to be a memorable celebration of health, culture, and community spirit.
